ABOUT ME

jhv_edited.jpg

We must be strong, we must be tough, we must be experimental, edgy and new. But we also must be kind, caring, thoughtful and considerate. We all should drive into the world and find out as much as we can about ourselves and our surroundings, without damaging what we see. Be bold and make a statement, shout out to the world who you are but think about what you are saying. The choices we make and the things we buy have a greater impact that we might first think. No animal should be harmed for the sake of a style.

BIO

Hey I'm Steph,

I have recently finished my final year at Arts University Bournemouth, where I have learned how to fully realise a project, from research and design, to sampling and producing final products. During my time at university I experimented with many aspects of menswear design, which included fabric, treatments, coatings, textile developments, deconstruction, cut, and construction. I also worked with knit and indigo dyes, pushing the boundaries and exploring how far I could go whilst looking at the future of denim and at the same time understanding its past.

I really enjoyed being hands on with the fabrics and using them in new and innovative ways. Being sustainably conscious is really important and has led me to creative diverse outcomes. I found exciting new ways to treat and use the material, which I really enjoyed and would like to expand further, by experiencing this on a commercial level. I have a strong understanding and skill for the , cut, fit and manufacturing process of garments and see the importance of this when designing.

A balance of functionality and design is always at the forefront of my aesthetic. Using my experience in pattern cutting, both by hand and digitally, I work with digital software like Lectra modaris and Clo 3D alongside drape to create and prototype original design. I also work with additional softwares, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, when designing, creating tech packs and specification sheets.

I enjoy deconstructing and reconstructing garments to get dynamic silhouettes paired with raw and rugged textures, and I am always curious of where the limits lie with menswear design, and how far an idea can be pushed.

GFW AWARDS

I recently won the adaptation award at Graduate Fashion week at London fashion week. This award was for my ability to adapt my collection and find news ways to work due to Covid-19 restrictions. After my university closed and the whole country locked down. We were told to stop all practical work and focus on sketch book and portfolio work. This was heart breaking to hear as we all had been working on our garments all year and had just started final manufacture of our collections. I had to move back home and felt very uncertain about my future with my degree and career. However  through hard work and thinking outside the box I was able to finish my degree with first class honours and win this amazing award for my work. I turned my very tactile, textile based project to a digital platform using Clo 3D to design, pattern cut and fully realise my collection. I was able to render my garments on models and see it come to life as if Covid-19 hadn't happened.
